Tips to motivate!

Weight-bearing physical activity can be easy, inexpensive, or even free - here are some ideas:

  • Walk instead of driving or taking public transportation.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Take a fitness or dance class at an adult education center, YMCA, community recreation center, or other gym.
  • Weightlift at your school's fitness facilities or a gym.
  • Get involved in a sport at your school or in your community.
  • Dance at a club or at home.
  • Get together with others at a park or gym to play basketball, soccer, or frisbee.
  • Find a trail for walking or hiking.
  • Buy a fitness video or weights to use at home.

Getting motivated!

  • Partner with a friend or family member to walk, go to the gym, or participate in a sport.
  • Make physical activity part of your regular schedule - you'll be less likely to put it off.
  • Get a little help: take a class at the local Y or adult education center, or get some personal training at your gym (many gyms offer a free training session with membership).
  • Check with your health insurance provider to see if they help pay for membership to a gym.
