Fight osteoporosis now with physical activity

Being physically active keeps you feeling fit and energetic - and it's also an important step in fighting osteoporosis. "Weight-bearing" physical activity - which makes your bones and muscle work against gravity - helps you build healthy bones.

Lots of activities are weight-bearing, and some of them you probably already do!

  • Walking, jogging, or running
  • Climbing the stairs
  • Dancing
  • Sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball - at school, in community leagues, or pick-up sports at a park or community center
  • Weightlifting
  • Jumping rope
  • Martial arts
  • Bowling
  • Yoga, pilates
  • Housework and yardwork, like cleaning, gardening, shoveling snow

Activities like biking and swimming are not weight-bearing and aren't as helpful in building bone. If you enjoy biking or swimming, make sure that you fit in some weight-bearing physical activity too!

You can do weight-bearing physical activities in many different places:

  • Community centers, adult education centers
  • Parks
  • School
  • Beach
  • Gyms, fitness clubs
  • Home
  • In the neighborhood of your home, school, or office
  • YMCA/YWCA
  • Boys & Girls Clubs
  • On the Charles River esplanade
