Fight osteoporosis now with physical activity
Being physically active keeps you feeling fit and energetic - and it's also an important step in fighting osteoporosis. "Weight-bearing" physical activity - which makes your bones and muscle work against gravity - helps you build healthy bones.
Lots of activities are weight-bearing, and some of them you probably already do!
- Walking, jogging, or running
- Climbing the stairs
- Dancing
- Sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball - at school, in community leagues, or pick-up sports at a park or community center
- Weightlifting
- Jumping rope
- Martial arts
- Bowling
- Yoga, pilates
- Housework and yardwork, like cleaning, gardening, shoveling snow
Activities like biking and swimming are not weight-bearing and aren't as helpful in building bone. If you enjoy biking or swimming, make sure that you fit in some weight-bearing physical activity too!
You can do weight-bearing physical activities in many different places:
- Community centers, adult education centers
- Parks
- School
- Beach
- Gyms, fitness clubs
- Home
- In the neighborhood of your home, school, or office
- YMCA/YWCA
- Boys & Girls Clubs
- On the Charles River esplanade
